The Book of No Worries: A survival guide for growing-up
Introduction: What Are Worries?
Worrying is thinking about problems— not just actual problems you really have, but also ones that might happen in the future. And thinking about them over and over and over again. Worries can feel like a load of bees buzzing endlessly around your mind, refusing to let you think about anything else.
Why do we worry?
Your brain is always looking ahead for possible danger, difficulties, and problems—it is a way of keeping you safe. In a way, worrying is your brain trying to protect you. Then there are practical ways that you can keep your worries in check, to stay happy and positive.
That’s what this book is all about!
Growing up can be tough. It’s a difficult journey, because there’s a lot to deal with—your changing body, your developing brain, all kinds of new experiences, and some brand new emotions too.
What Is Mental Health?
So what is mental ill-health?
In the same way that we can’t control if we get the flu, getting mental ill-health is not a choice. There are all sorts of factors that can contribute: things like the genes you inherit from your family, your upbringing, your life experiences, and your brain chemistry.
Why is all this important?
Just as exercise can keep us physically fit and healthy, things like having close relationships and talking to friends and family or an adult you trust can keep you emotionally well. Key things to remember are that you are never alone (however much you might feel you are) and that you should never be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help.
